“I don’t allow other players to have ‘the throne’,” said the 2-time U.S. Open winners swing coach, more particularly about Scottie Scheffler. Now, the hot and honest confession of Bryson DeChambeau’s coach was not because Scheffler was his student’s rival. The statements have a far deeper meaning to it.

At the recent episode of the Foreplay podcast’s episode, Dana Dahlquist explained the theory behind giving somebody the ‘Throne’ in the golf world, which now sits on the head of Scheffler. Dahlquist explained that although World #1 is a great human being and his coach Randy Smith has a nice unit together, he still doesn’t allow a few things at his center. He said, “I wouldn’t allow any of my students to like Scotty, to be like, he’s The Guy.” But what is the reason?

The prominent golf coach explained by giving an example of Tiger Woods and how he sat on that throne for the initial years of his career. He recalled the famous interview of the 15-time major winner with Curtis Strange and the exuding confidence of Woods, who always thought he would win. And he did. Dahlquist explained his team and people have ingrained something in Scheffler’s mindset as well. These two pros have been taught from a young age to believe in themselves, thus it perpetuates in their games.

Additionally, Dahlquist described that even the media elects these players as the best golfers and helps to perpetuate the idea further. But giving his students the same concept might work against them and, thus, Dahlquist doesn’t allow students to have Scheffler as their ideal. However, he does tell them something else to keep up their morale.

What is Dana Dahlquist’s advice for his students?
He is the #1 ranked swing coach in the entire state of California and has taught some of the best golfers around the globe. Dana Dahlquist wants each of his students to be the next best thing in golf and hence cannot tell them to follow an established golfer path. But he advised them to make their ways to be unique, like Tiger Woods and Scottie Scheffler.

Talking about his concept of teaching, Dahlquist explained that he also spreads the notion of the best golfer to each of his students. He said that whether they are young college golfers or just starting playing golf, he tells them to believe, “I’m the best person at this golf course I’m the best first thing in my college, and best person in this town and, and so on and so forth.”

Undoubtedly, his expertise and suggestion to be the best in the world probably worked for Bryson DeChambeau as he became the 124th U.S. Open champion and, subsequently, the hottest player of the year.
