After a valiant effort from Frances Tiafoe, it’s now Tommy Paul’s turn to challenge Carlos Alcaraz’s Wimbledon title defense. Paul and Alcaraz are set for a thrilling quarterfinal showdown on Tuesday, with the American eager to make his mark.

Tiafoe put up a fierce fight against Alcaraz in their third-round clash but ultimately fell 5-7, 6-2, 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2. Now, Paul faces the daunting task of taking down the reigning champion. Fresh off a commanding 6-2, 7-6(4), 6-2 victory over Roberto Bautista Agut, Paul shared his thoughts in a post-match press conference, recalling his first visit to Centre Court to watch Tiafoe battle Alcaraz.

“It was the first time I went to Centre Court at Wimbledon,” Paul said. “I got there at the end of the fourth set. From then on, it didn’t go so well for him. We talked a bit today, but not too much, because he knew that I had to play another match before playing Alcaraz. But we will probably talk a bit.”

Paul acknowledged the challenges of facing Alcaraz, a player he has encountered before. He emphasized the importance of serving well and highlighted his excitement for the upcoming match. “The serve is always the most important shot in men’s tennis,” Paul stated. “It will be something I will want to do very well in my next round. But the return is also very important. We both play a pretty aggressive style of tennis. He has been playing very well and ultra-aggressive. It’s fun for people. Honestly, it’s a lot of fun to play against Alcaraz. I’m very excited for the match.”

Paul could be making his Centre Court debut in this quarterfinal, a prospect that excites him immensely. “Centre Court at Wimbledon is probably the most iconic court in tennis,” Paul said. “I’m more excited than anything. I don’t think the schedule has been released. It’s not confirmed that I’ll be playing on Centre Court. Like I said, I don’t care where they put me. If it’s on Centre Court, I’m happy. If it’s on Court 1, I’ll be ready to play on Court 1.”

Having reached Wimbledon’s second week once before, Paul has already surpassed his previous best by advancing to the fourth round this year. As he prepares for his quarterfinal match, the anticipation and excitement are palpable, setting the stage for a thrilling encounter.
