Scottie Scheffler Under Threat as Lone Tiger Woods Hope Offers the Only Solace at Tour Championship

Despite being the bookmakers’ favorite with +110 odds to win the Tour Championship, Scottie Scheffler’s history at East Lake suggests a tougher road ahead. Golf Channel’s Brandel Chamblee highlighted that only once in the 17-year history of the FedEx Cup has the leader shot the lowest score at the Tour Championship—Tiger Woods in 2007. The average “raw” finish of a FedEx Cup leader at this event is just under 12th place, and Scheffler himself has struggled, finishing 21st and 13th in raw scores in the last two years.

Last year, Scheffler started at 10-under but could only manage a 1-under “raw” score, falling 18 strokes behind Viktor Hovland, who started at 8-under and posted a 19-under raw score. Although Scheffler tied for sixth thanks to his starting advantage, his performance at East Lake has been far from his best.

Adding to his challenge is Scheffler’s open criticism of the FedEx Cup format, which he has called “silly” for boiling a season-long race down to one tournament. Yet, despite his reservations, Scheffler remains determined to win every tournament he enters. As the Tour Championship looms, all eyes will be on whether he can overcome the odds and his own past performances.
