Scheffler’s Safe Play Thwarted: PGA Tour’s New Rules Shake Up East Lake’s Toughest Hole

Scottie Scheffler, after a practice round at the newly redesigned East Lake Golf Club, devised a clever strategy to navigate the course’s daunting par-5 18th hole. Architect Andrew Green had made the final hole more challenging, and Scheffler found a way to bypass the obstacles by hitting from the 18th tee to the 10th fairway. This strategy, aimed at avoiding the pond and water hazards on the 18th, was quickly gaining traction among top players like Xander Schauffele.

However, their plans were disrupted when the PGA Tour Rules Committee introduced new boundaries, declaring the 10th fairway out of bounds during play of the 18th hole. While many players were frustrated by the change, six-time PGA Tour winner Chris Kirk supported the decision, emphasizing the importance of preserving the course’s intended design.

As the tournament unfolds, all eyes will be on how the players tackle East Lake’s most challenging hole under these new constraints.
