In a candid interview with Kyle Porter on *Normal Sport*, World No. 3 Rory McIlroy opened up about balancing golf and life, praising fellow golfer Scottie Scheffler for mastering that balance. McIlroy noted how Scheffler’s humility and faith play a key role, saying, “I think he, more than anyone right now, has figured that out.”

While admiring Scheffler, McIlroy also reminisced about two unlikely players who deeply influenced his amateur career: Philip Francis and Jamie Lovemark. Francis, once unbeatable during McIlroy’s teenage years, dominated junior golf with over 140 event wins. Meanwhile, Lovemark, with his powerful swing and impressive stature, left a lasting impression on McIlroy during the Walker Cup. Both players, though not household names today, shaped the champion McIlroy has become.

He also shared how he was initially unimpressed with Jordan Spieth, only to be astounded by Spieth’s near-Grand Slam in 2015. “I thought, ‘What is the big deal with this kid?’” McIlroy admitted, recalling his surprise when Spieth went on to win the Masters by four strokes.

McIlroy’s next challenge is the Abu Dhabi HSBC Championship 2024, where he might face Oliver Fisher, another name from his past. What will happen when these paths cross again? Fans are eager to find out.
