Rory McIlroy Very Close to Stealing Unwanted Record from Tiger Woods as the 89th Masters Approaches

Is this the best version of Rory McIlroy anyone has ever seen? That’s definitely worth a debate. The Irishman has been in incredible form in 2025. He kicked things off with an incredible win in the AT&T Pebble Beach Pro-Am. The 28x PGA Tour winner showcased excellent strokeplay from the tee to the putt. That continued over the next couple of events before McIlroy captured another big win at THE PLAYERS Championship. He looked confident and calm, had very few unnecessary errors, and made golf look so simple.

To provide more details about Tiger Woods‘s major win gap, the analyst further stated “3,954 days was that streak. Rory McIlroy is at 3,882 days since his PGA Championship win at Valhalla in 2014. The date that he would cross that threshold and have a longer stretch between Tiger’s and his is June 8th, 2025. Which means if he doesn’t win the Masters or the PGA this year, his streak would be longer than Tiger’s.” While Woods was injured for a lot of the period in between his drought, McIlroy has been consistently getting better and raising the level of his game. He has won at least one title nearly every year since his debut. The Holywood local has also gradually become a lot fitter and is visibly in better shape to keep up with the sport. The McIlroy who made his PGA Tour debut was a bit out of shape and a lot less polished than he is today.

And yet, a major win evades the 35-year-old. The luck of the Irish may have favored him during his win at THE PLAYERS Championship, but McIlroy will need to really break all mental barriers if he wants to get back to winning majors. Especially since he is already battling an injury, something that he received a lot of flak for. Something that he hasn’t been able to do for nearly 11 years now. And while McIlroy has been consistently winning other titles in between this period, how does he compare to Woods’s record during his dry spell? Let’s compare their records.

Tiger Woods vs. Rory McIlroy: Titles won between their major droughts

While Rory McIlroy hasn’t broken his losing streak yet, we will consider all his wins till the present. In between his last major win and the 2025 Texas Children’s Houston Open, the Irishman has won 19 titles. This includes 2x THE PLAYERS Championship wins, an Arnold Palmer Invitational, and 3x Tour Championships. He also has had a couple of DP World Tour Championship wins and 3x Hero Dubai Desert Classic titles.

During his time away from major wins, Tiger Woods captured 17 PGA Tour titles. This includes 3x Arnold Palmer Invitationals, 1x Tour Championship, and 1x THE PLAYERS Championship. Woods didn’t have many International wins during this period.

McIlroy clearly has had a much better run during his major drought than Woods. With age and health on his side, the 28x PGA Tour winner might have many more major wins written in his future than the GOAT’s 1 Masters win. Hopefully, McIlroy can break the streak soon and start a major winning run soon.
