Scottie Scheffler Responds to ‘Dumb Question’ from the Media After Opening Round 64 at the RBC Heritage

World No. 1 Scottie Scheffler made a strong statement on Thursday at Harbour Town Links, firing a brilliant seven-under-par 64 to begin his title defense at the RBC Heritage. While three shots behind early leader Justin Thomas, Scheffler’s bogey-free performance was a clear reminder of why he remains one of the most formidable forces on the PGA Tour—even when he’s not at his peak.

Coming off a disappointing Masters finish just days earlier, the 28-year-old Texan looked refreshed and focused on Hilton Head Island. Unlike the grind at Augusta National, Scheffler described his round at the RBC Heritage as “fairly stress free.” That assessment, however, sparked a curious exchange during his post-round interview when a reporter asked whether the round felt “too easy.”

“That’s a dumb question,” Scheffler replied bluntly. “Did it feel easy? It was definitely a less stressful round of golf, compared to last week. A lot of the stuff I had to do last week to shoot a good score, I didn’t have to do today. The golf course is obviously a bit different. Overall, a fairly stress free day, but I would never say that golf is easy, ever. Golf is hard.”

The response showcased Scheffler’s candid nature and respect for the game—even on a day when he made it look effortless.

Reflecting on his play, Scheffler said, “I felt like I played really solid. I gave myself a lot of looks out there. Definitely was in position most of the day. I think I maybe hit one errant tee ball and had to scramble but made a really good par there on 11. But outside of that, I felt like I kept the golf course in front of me for the most part.”

Despite not winning any of his first seven starts in 2025, Scheffler has made all seven cuts and racked up four top-10 finishes. His consistency has never wavered, though critics have noted a recurring flaw with his driver—specifically the “left miss.”

Golf analyst Rick Gehman commented on the issue, stating: “My hunch… is the reason that he lost strokes off the tee last week was because of that left miss with the driver. It is something we saw early in 2025, it’s not been nearly as good as the way he’s driven it in 2024.”

Still, Thursday’s round suggested that Scheffler may be rounding into form once again. With his sharp iron play, poised demeanor, and razor-sharp short game, the reigning RBC Heritage champion is poised to chase another title—and perhaps silence any remaining doubts.

Scheffler may not consider golf easy, but when he plays like this, he sure makes it look that way.
