Scottie Scheffler and Jordan Spieth have known each other for a very long time now.
Whilst Spieth is three years older than Scheffler, the two grew up playing against each other in junior tournaments in Dallas.
The Ryder Cup teammates have experienced vastly different fortunes on the PGA Tour over the past few years.
Whislt Scheffler has gone from strength to strength, Spieth has regressed and has dropped outside the top 50 in the Official World Golf Rankings.
Scheffler is far better than Spieth when it comes to course management, and that is one of the main reasons why he’s had so many more wins than his good friend over the past two or three years.
In fairness though, the reigning FedEx Cup champion is better than every other player on the planet in that regard.
However, he hasn’t been anywhere near his best this season, despite racking up five top-10 finishes in eight events played.
The 13-time PGA Tour winner is due a win, and he will be very keen to get off the mark this week in his home state.
The same can be said of Spieth.
Scottie Scheffler on his relationship with Jordan Spieth after years of playing on the PGA Tour together
The folks in Dallas are eagerly awaiting Thursday’s opening round at the CJ Cup Byron Nelson.
Scheffler and Spieth will undoubtedly draw a huge crowd at TPC Craig Ranch during the first two days.
The two-time Masters champion will tee off at 12:33pm local time on Thursday alongside his good friend and Ryder Cup teammate as well as another fellow Dallas native, Si Woo Kim.
Scheffler responded when asked if he is looking forward to being paired with Spieth:
“Jordan and I got to play out here a couple years ago. I think we played with Willie Z. It was a lot of fun. The crowd was great. Si Woo and I play the same club here at home. We have three guys all from Dallas that will be playing this week and all together. So it should be a lot of fun.“
Then Scheffler was asked whether he has any memories of playing alongside Spieth when they were young children:
“I was going to say, as far as my long term memory goes, it’s shockingly bad. I do have some recollections of playing with those guys. Will and I were always the same age. So we played in tons of tournaments against each other.
“Jordan was three years older than us, and he was obviously really good. I would say Jordan was always a guy we looked up to when we were young. Let’s say when I was 13, 14 playing in team PGA events here, Jordan was here playing in the Byron Nelson. He was a guy we both looked up to and wanted to emulate on the course.

“It’s pretty wild to have three guys from the same area to have the success I think that we’ve had. A lot of that is just the competition. We were always looking at Jordan because he was a little bit older, a little bit better than us. Will and I were always kind of looking at each other because we were both pretty good. He’s a highly competitive guy as well so we were always trying to beat each other.
“We’ve had a great friendship for a number of years now, and golf’s always been a huge part of that. It’s really kind of fun to look back on the journey we’ve been on, and being able to live out our dream and play the PGA Tour is pretty cool.“
Scottie Scheffler vs Jordan Spieth PGA Tour records
Scheffler and Spieth are two of the most successful PGA Tour players of all-time.
The scary thing is that they are only 28 and 31 respectively.
How do their records stack up alongside one another’s though?
PGA Tour record Scottie Scheffler Jordan Spieth
Appearances 138 290
Wins 13 13
Top 5s 47 55
Top 10s 64 91
Career earnings $76,722,784 $64,307,894
Scheffler clearly has a better strike rate than Spieth when it comes to wins.
And the 31-year-old will be desperate to start winning regularly again in order to stamp down his authority on the PGA Tour once again.
It would surprise nobody at all if Scheffler won the CJ Cup Byron Nelson this week. However, there is a real argument to be made that Spieth needs the win more than his good friend.
