Mirra Andreeva has seen her efforts to have another breakout campaign in 2024 slowed as she has been forced to accept an injury layoff.
Andreeva misses out on what would have been her Miami Open debut.
The 2023 WTA Newcomer of the Year has cited an arm injury for the withdrawal which she announced shortly after her Indian Wells exit.
“I’ve always wanted to play this amazing tournament,” Andreeva wrote on social media Tuesday, adding “so it was very hard for me to decide to skip it this year.”
World No 38 Andreeva, who is only 16 years old, was defeated by American Katie Volynets in the opening round of her BNP Paribas Open main draw debut last week.
She had only participated in two tournaments since making it to the Australian Open’s fourth round in January.
Citing a wrist injury, Andreeva withdrew from the Qatar Total Open. The following week, she was defeated by American Peyton Stearns in the opening round of the Dubai Duty Free Tennis Championships.
She also withdrew from the Indian Wells doubles tournament, where she was supposed to compete alongside Anastasia Potapova, with her wrist pain issue resurfacing.
In an effort to “get[t] stronger and be[ing] ready for the clay season”— the part of the season in which she made her breakthrough a year ago— Andreeva continued, saying that she’s being cautious with all the residual health issues that have beset her this term.
Andreeva qualified for the fourth round of the Madrid Open as a wild card entrant, and she made it as far as the third round of Roland Garros in a stunning Grand Slam debut.
Hard Rock Stadium will host the Miami Open from 17 until 31 March.
Grand Slam winners Simona Halep, Emma Raducanu, Venus Williams, and Caroline Wozniacki are among the athletes who have confirmed their entry, along with the full Top 10 in the most recent WTA rankings.
Andreeva stunned Ons Jabeur at the Australian Open earlier this season but still considers clay to be her best surface and wants to be in the best possible shape for the upcoming swing.
Her three wins at the Brisbane International and three more at the Australian Open suggested that Andreeva could be set for a massive 2024 season.
On May 29, 2023, Andreeva rose to the top of the junior rankings worldwide shortly before she transitioned to the WTA Tour full-time. She advanced to the Australian Open girls’ singles final in 2023, where she was defeated 6-7, 6-4, 7-5 by Alina Korneeva.
In addition, she has won three ITF junior championships, the largest of which was the J2 Vigo competition in 2021. Her final junior circuit competition, as of July 2023, was the ITF J500 in Cairo, Egypt in February 2023, when she placed second.
Her promising start to the 2024 season, marked by victories at the Brisbane International and Australian Open, hints at a potentially remarkable year ahead. Despite setbacks, Andreeva’s past achievements in junior competitions and her seamless transition to the WTA Tour underscore her resilience and determination in the face of challenges.
