Major Champ Suspended By LIV Golf; Takes Swipe At Other Tours For Anti-doping nforcement

McDowell, 45, registered a positive test during LIV’s Nashville event due to using a decongestant that included R-methamphetamine, which is on the banned substance list. The former U.S. Open winner will receive a one-tournament suspension and a fine of $125,000. Additionally, McDowell and his team’s results for the Nashville competition were disqualified (McDowell finished 42nd out of a 52-player field with his Smash club coming 12th out of 13 teams).

McDowell kept going, using his suspension has a chance to take shots at other unnamed tours for, in McDowell’s opinion, a lack of doping enforcement.

“LIV’s Anti-Doping Policy is designed to be thorough and transparent. Unlike some other tours, LIV enforces these rules rigorously, which made this situation particularly challenging for me. However, I respect the need for these rules and penalties — they are essential for maintaining the integrity of the sport. I’m proud of my 22-year career and the way I’ve conducted myself throughout it. Now, I’m focused on moving forward and getting back on the golf course. I look forward to seeing everyone at LIV Chicago.”

McDowell jumped to the Saudi-backed circuit during its inaugural season in 2022. He finished 39th in the individual standings that summer and followed up by coming in 42nd last year. McDowell has 16 global career wins, including 11 on the European Tour.
