In a candid 2019 interview with Australian Golf Digest, Phil Scott, father of golf star Adam Scott, opened up about the relentless criticism his son has faced over his putting. Despite Adam’s impressive career—including 30 event wins, a stint as world No. 1, and a Masters victory—his putting has often been under the media’s harsh spotlight.

Phil Scott defended his son, stating, “He’s always been a streaky putter, even as a junior golfer, but it often looks worse than it is.” He went on to criticize the media, claiming, “Media love the negative story, and the public follow the media, so next thing every club golfer says Adam is a bad putter. Trust me, if you are a bad putter, you aren’t on tour.”

Despite the media’s portrayal, Adam Scott has his unique approach to the game. He practices with a putter he doesn’t intend to use in tournaments, keeping his regular putter feeling “fresh and new.” This unconventional method, along with carrying multiple putters, has drawn criticism, but Scott remains unfazed.

Even as he acknowledges his putting inconsistency, Adam Scott’s father firmly believes that his son’s performance on the greens speaks for itself, dismissing the negative narrative spun by the media.
