Scottie Scheffler dealt brutal burn from PGA Tour rival in live Tour Championship broadcast

Scottie Scheffler, the world’s No. 1 golfer, is on track to secure his first FedEx Cup title at East Lake, Atlanta. Starting with a two-shot advantage thanks to the staggered strokes format, Scheffler has extended his lead to 21-under-par, sitting four strokes ahead of Collin Morikawa. However, amidst his stellar performance, Scheffler found himself at the center of some unexpected commentary from fellow PGA Tour star and close friend, Sam Burns.

During the second round of the Tour Championship, Scheffler’s tee shot on the 13th hole landed in a fairway bunker, followed by a misfire from the sand that completely missed the green. Burns, who had already finished his round, joined the Golf Channel’s commentary team and couldn’t resist taking a playful jab at his friend’s misstep. As Scheffler’s ball seemed destined to leap from one bunker to the next, Burns quipped, “This guy is terrible!” The comment, though sharp, was all in good humor, reflecting the strong bond between the two golfers.

Scheffler and Burns have forged a close friendship on the PGA Tour, often teaming up for practice rounds and even sharing accommodations during tournaments. Their bond extends beyond the golf course, with Burns even stepping in as a babysitter for Scheffler’s newborn son, Bennett. The duo’s camaraderie was on full display earlier in the month at the FedEx St. Jude Championship, where Burns was spotted playfully lifting Bennett in the air as Scheffler took his shot.

Scheffler has admitted that Burns is a fierce competitor, often dominating their early-week practice matches. Realizing this, Scheffler began partnering with Burns in their friendly wagers, leading to much better results. “He would thrash me at the start of the week, so I started picking him as my partner, and we’ve been doing much better since,” Scheffler revealed.

Despite the competitive nature of their practice rounds, which often include other top golfers like Justin Thomas and Max Homa, the atmosphere remains lighthearted. “This week, Sam and I played against Justin and Max on Monday, and it’s just fun,” Scheffler shared. “It’s a good time with your mates. The beginning of the weeks are typically more relaxed.”

As Scheffler edges closer to his FedEx Cup triumph, the playful banter between him and Burns serves as a reminder of the camaraderie that defines the PGA Tour, even at its highest levels of competition.
