Mystery Illness & Injuries To Jeopardize $7.2M Event in Absence of Big-Name Golfers

2024 marks the seventeenth edition of the World Wide Technology Championship. The event offers a $7.2 million purse to the contestants. However, it looks like even before the 132-player field could kick off, there were a few names that could be absent. Any withdrawals, for any reason, reduce the luster of this tournament. The field of this tournament is not very decorated to begin with, there are only three players from the top 50 of the OWGR list: Cameron Young, Max Greyserman, and Lucas Glover who are going to be teeing off at the Tiger Woods-designed course.

On November 5, after the first practice round on Tuesday at Cabo, Maverick McNealy, who has three top 15s, a T-26, and one missed cut in his five appearances in the event sighted that he was not feeling his best. On the other hand, Erik Barnes, Bill Haas, and Taylor Montgomery too are on the list of probable withdrawals, with a knee, shoulder, and undisclosed injury, respectively.

According to the Golf Injury Report, Danny Willett, Adam Schenk, and Bud Cauley are on the list of probable withdrawals as well due to shoulder, back, and chest injuries. Willet who won the Masters in 2016 has been going through a troubling shoulder for a long time now. He withdrew from the Horizon Irish Open due to a flare-up. After this WD, he got to know that the tear had doubled in size, and only surgery was the long-term solution.

Finally, Austin Smotherman and Cameron Champ are also going through some injuries that have not been disclosed. So, as per reports, nine players could announce their withdrawal, and the Wednesday practice round is yet to begin. Who knows what is in store for the event to be held at El Cardonal Golf Course?
