Rory McIlroy posts four-word message on social media after finally winning The Masters on Sunday

Rory McIlroy is indeed a Masters champion, a five-time major champion and a grand slam winner after playing his part in yet another mesmerising final day in one of the sport’s four biggest events on Sunday.

It is still hard to believe just what Rory McIlroy put himself through on Sunday at The Masters. Of course, everyone expected the Northern Irishman to not have everything go his own way in the final round at Augusta National. But few could have imagined what would follow.

McIlroy initially threw away his two-shot lead after the first hole. He would then fight back to go four clear around the turn.

However, he made a double bogey on 13 and followed that with a five on 14. It started to appear that it could be a flip of a coin which decides whether McIlroy or Justin Rose wins the green jacket.

The 35-year-old only needed to make a par on the last to get the job done. But when his putt for a four slid by, it meant that a playoff was required.

Thankfully for those desperate to see McIlroy finally get that Masters title which has eluded him throughout his career, a birdie on his 73rd hole of the week was enough to secure that fifth major. Unsurprisingly, the emotion poured out of McIlroy almost as soon as the putt dropped.

He has now taken to social media following his victory, simply posting: ‘Dreams do come true’.

What is going to be fascinating to see over the next few years is how his Masters win impacts McIlroy’s fortunes in the majors.

For so long, it appeared that the pressure was holding McIlroy back. But that pressure has now gone. No more will people think about what happened at the US Open at Pinehurst and wonder if he has the bottle to win majors anymore.

And speaking on The Smylie Show, Smylie Kaufman suggested that he expects McIlroy to now double his major tally in the future.

“Sixth guy to win the career grand slam, standing on the 18th green in a green jacket, I don’t think I ever thought he was actually going to do it,” he said.

“It’s into a different echelon, it’s why this one is so important and why every year we talked about it leading up to it, whether he could do it. I think the floodgates are going to open for this guy. I think he’s going to get to double digit major wins. He’s playing as good a golf as he ever has.”

It really feels like there is nothing which should be holding McIlroy back now.
